CombatRules

Game Design is becoming Combat Rules.

Our mission is to re-release out-of-print World War II miniatures rulesets. The first is Fast Rules, soon Tractics, and later Brew Up.

How it started? Having been an avid wargamer for many years, I pined for my old copy of Tractics and Fast Rules for a WWII double-blind project.* My goal for this project was to keep the rules manageable but the suspense and surprise at maximum.

I found the authors and publishers. I also found that the copyright status was a bit complex and would apply through the 2060s! After being a co-founder of the Judges Guild in 1976, retiring in 1978, how’s it going? I’m back in wargame publishing again! While thinking about all this, I also rediscovered some forgotten concepts and “style of play” that others might enjoy.

Getting these great rulesets back in print is a big project, and we are making judicious updates. Indeed, with Desktop Publishing, they can look a lot nicer. We will have a Kindle version also! If you don’t have a Kindle, you can download the free reader app for your phone or computer. We do not plan to offer PDF versions.

On this blog, WargameCampaign.WordPress, I will post free play aids for our authors’ rulesets. We have secured the domain combatrules.com, but it is not ready for the public just yet. So this webpage serves for the time being for combatrules.com.

We plan to add other items of interest to wargamers! I invite you to support this effort. – Bill Owen, Combat Rules

PS let me know if there are rulesets you’d like to see out again!

*Note how I wanted both rulesets. This shows how I was already mentally “kit-bashing” the rulesets together into something “new and improved”.

  1. If you are only going to hardcopy publish—I would enjoin you to provide a substantial gutter on the left page so we can get them punched and spiral bound for sitting flat on table….PDFs are very useful for this—we can print them our own desired size and bind them—One option is to put the purchaser of the PDF in a part of the page it can’t be removed on each page…..so if copies show up, you know who to bill.

Good Luck! Look forward to updates of these things!

    1. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Thanks for your input! Being a gamer first and a publisher second, I try to have practical options. We do have a generous gutter size AND we are looking at producing a spiral bound option. It just won’t be the first version of the book as it may be more expensive and we would rather put out the less expensive perfect-bound edition initially.
